How We Groom Anxious and Reactive Dogs

How We Groom Anxious and Reactive Dogs

About 30% of our clients have dogs that other groomers have refused or struggled with. Anxious, reactive, and fear-aggressive dogs aren't problem dogs — they're dogs who've learned that grooming is threatening. We work to change that.

Fear Free certification

Sarah is Fear Free Certified, which means she's trained specifically in reading canine stress signals and reducing fear, anxiety, and stress during grooming. The certification isn't just a credential — it changes how you approach every dog.

What Fear Free looks like in practice

  • We start by letting the dog investigate the van on their own terms before we start
  • High-value treats are used throughout — not just at the end
  • We watch for stress signals (lip licking, yawning, whale eye, stiff body) and pause when we see them
  • We work on the dog's most comfortable areas first
  • Sessions can be broken into multiple shorter visits if needed

For reactive dogs

Reactive dogs are often reactive because they feel trapped and threatened. Mobile grooming helps: there are no other dogs, no kennel, and the dog is in a familiar environment. Many reactive dogs who couldn't be groomed at salons do fine with us.

We never use restraint beyond what's needed for safety. We don't muzzle unless the dog is actively biting or has a bite history — and we discuss this with the owner before the appointment.

The first appointment

For very anxious dogs, the first appointment might be short: maybe just getting comfortable in the van, a paw handling session, and a nail trim. That's fine. We'd rather end on a positive note than push through and set the dog back.

What we need from you

Tell us everything — bite history, triggers, what's worked before, what hasn't. The more we know before we arrive, the better we can prepare. And please don't apologize for your dog. We've heard it all, and we don't judge.
